Atlas searches split into two engines. Mixing them is how a 3.6 gets the wrong viscosity. Read the cap.
| Typical U.S. Atlas | VW spec | Viscosity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018–2020 3.6 VR6 | 502 00 | 5W-40 | Larger sump than the 2.0T. Don’t guess quarts — measure. |
| 2018–2020 2.0T | 502 00 (confirm) | 5W-40 / 5W-30 with 502 | Early 2.0T Atlas is not automatically 508. |
| 2021–2023 2.0T | Often 508 00 | 0W-20 | Most current-shape U.S. 2.0T Atlases. |
| 2024–2026 2.0T (incl. Cross Sport) | 508 00 | 0W-20 | ~5.7–6.0 qt class fill with filter — confirm VIN. |
Cross Sport uses the same oil family as the three-row Atlas of the same year. Towing and summer A/C idle are severe service — don’t stretch a 10k interval if you pull a trailer to the Hamptons.
- What oil does a 2021 VW Atlas take?
- 2.0T: typically 0W-20 VW 508 00. 3.6: VW 502 00 5W-40. Cap and booklet beat this page.
- Same as Tiguan?
- 2019+ Tiguan 2.0T and late Atlas 2.0T often share 508 00 0W-20. The 3.6 Atlas does not.
